Extreme TV Makeovers Downsize

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is downsizing its projects so fewer recipients will run into financial trouble trying to pay high utility bills and outsize tax assessments.

We "scaled back," says Conrad Ricketts, an executive producer for the show.

The average size of current makeover homes is 2,800 to 3,000 square feet. Swimming pools, which used to be a must-have, have been eliminated unless the recipient needs one for therapy.

At the height of the real estate boom, homes regularly boasted more than 5,000 square feet.
